TITLE : place/change making

This post is a short reflection on the long-scheduled collaboration between Peckham Platform & THE ADV_. Initially intended for the Small Island Vibes event, led by Nephertiti Schandorf. THE ADV was invited by Emilian Isibo to provide a strategic space for the local community to build on methods of resilience to make the gentrification of Peckham a positive experience for locals.

+ THE INVITATION

The event included discussions with Peckham locals, designers and architects reflecting on how we as community members can make meaningful changes to the spaces we live in and belong to. Placemaking/Changemaking is an exploration of the spatial history and potential futures of Peckham with guests including Tami Masunda, Dr. Charmaine Brown, Daniel Oduntan, Linett Kamala, Tolu Elusadé, Christopher Lutterodt-Quarcoo and members of our local community.

Supported by; Local Trust Creative Civic Change and is part of Tilting the Mirror, an intergenerational placemaking programme that uses arts and creativity to develop civic leadership.

+ The Challenge

The Southwark Council-backed conversion of a disused car park (Peckham Levels) into a cultural destination was heralded as an innovative community venture. Now, many of those involved say that it has failed BAME residents locally referred to as an expanding agenda of “Black Urban Removal“ reminiscent of; Stratford, Hackney, Walthamstow, Wembley, Deptford, Camden and more.

+ THE Objective

Operating via our Institute, the aim of this immersive forum was to mobilise;
a diverse range of locally based participants including; designers, intellectuals, teachers, and local business owners to systematically outline the core DNA of Peckham, and to what degree; change or displacement of select components can have in maintaining its current populous.

+ prescribed scenarios & why

In an exploration of the; culture, citizenship, and history of Peckham, THE ADV_ staged three of our twelve scenarios between 6-9pm, in the theatrical space of Mountview Drama School.

> [ Ref.erence ]Cultural Ideals / National Legacies / Questionable Truths
> [ Inheritance ] — Immigration / Social & Cultural Integration / National Identity
> [ Irrational ]Customs & Practices / Cultural Copyright / Inclusion

+ OUR FINDINGS

> The transitioning process from working to middle-class for locals.
> Defining factors between; custom, circumstance and class in defining culture.
> Notions of compensation for residents’ role in redevelopment interest.
> Economic Incentivisation for indigenous redevelopment

The conversation continues but the strategies have begun to form — we look forward to continuing to work with Peckham Platform to set an example of how redevelopment/gentrification can be undertaken from the inside out.
